Hayfork..Q72..Alt.
2322'..07/25..4115'x 60'..122. |
| |
Hayfork has
the longest runway in Trinity County. It is level, paved, reasonably well
marked and in good condition. It has clear approaches from either end. The
traffic pattern for both runways is north of the airport (left hand for 07,
right hand for 25) due to high terrain south of the airport. |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
There are
lights available for night operations but night operations are not encouraged
due to the mountainous terrain unless you have been checked out by a local
pilot. However, should you need the lights, they are pilot controlled on
122.8 (5x on, 7x off). |

Emergency
maintainance is available but no aviation fuel available..the nearest avgas
is at Benton (Redding area) about 20 minutes away in most general aviation
aircraft. Refer to the flight guides for food, lodging. Emergency services
(ie. crash, fire, medical) are provided by the Hayfork Volunteer Fire
Department. It has an excellent rating..one of the best in Northern
California. |

You can
open or close flight plans via a pay phone located near the hangar through
Rancho Murietta (Rancho) radio, 1-800-992-7433. Or you can open/close with
Rancho radio on 122.4 (Weaverville remote) when above 3000'. You can contact
OAK Center (132.2) at 7000' or above for flight following. Tie down anywhere
on the ramp mid field. There is a $3.00 per day fee if you over night. |

Hyampom..Q75..Alt.
1250'..14/32..2980' x 60'..122.8 |
| |
This is an
interesting airport and can present a challenge to the pilot, particularly
when landing RW 32. It is located in the small but beautiful Hyampom Valley
next to the South Fork of the Trinity River. |
| |
| |
| |
This is the
closest airport to Camp Royal (approximately 5 miles/15 minutes by car). The
community of Hyampom is very small, approximately 150 residents) and if you
blink your eyes as you pass through you might miss it. The airport itself is level, 2980' long at
1250' MSL. |
| |
| |
| |
| |
The surface
is paved, smooth and well marked for a VFR day airport. There is no night
flying at Hyampom. The airport was resurfaced in October of 1991 and new
runup pads were added at each end of the runway. There are excellent tie down
locations with good chains provided. Chocks are not provided. |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
Now about
the approaches and departures. The traffic pattern for both runways is west of
the airport at 2050'MSL(800'AGL), left pattern for 32, right pattern for 14.
There is no weather reporting at Hyampom and your best bet for weather info
is to check the weather at Redding or Red Bluff. Hyampom will generally be
similar or if unable to get any info call Camp Royal (this phone number will
be available to you before the Camp is in session..it changes annually).
122.9 is the CTAF but monitoring 122.8 also is not a bad idea as some
aircraft use this frequency. |

| |
| |
The winds
are usually calm in the morning but are sometimes quite strong in the
afternoon. The predominate afternoon winds are from the northwest
necessitating the use of RW 32. If winds are light RW 14 is the preferred
runway for landing, RW 32 for departures. RW 14 has a good maneuvering area
and allows for a good flat approach with the full runway length
available. |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
| |
RW 32 is
another matter...you will note there is a 700'displaced threshold reducing
the usable runway to 2280'. The reason for this is a house and trees located
on final close to the end of the runway. You might wish to mention to your
passengers that you will pass in close proximity to these trees and house.
You will need to maneuver in a small valley southeast of the airport over
town and then approach at an approximate 30 degree angle (about 290 degrees)
until lined up with the runway at about 300'AGL.

| |

Departures
present no real problems, however watch your density altitude (it is
frequently hot..100 +or-) and remember that house and trees on the southeast
end of the airport if you depart RW 14. RW 32 is the preferred departure
runway, wind permitting. If you arrive from over Hayfork look for Camp Royal
on your descent. It is 075 magnetic, 4 NM from the Hyampom airport, or 288
magnetic, 10NM from Hayfork. Take a moment or two to circle this beautiful
camp. It is very visible. The camp staff will have a receiver tuned to 122.9
(Camp Royal Radio) and a call to them, in the blind, will get transportation
on its way to pick you up. |

General notes: |
| |
| |
There is no aviation fuel
or maintenance available. |
| |
| |
The nearest
avgas is at Benton (Redding area) about 30 minutes away for most
aircraft. |
| |
| |
| |
Tie downs are provided
mid field..no chocks available. |
| |
| |
Overnite
tie down fee is $2.00..Camp Royal will take care of this. Check with David
Hammer. |
| |
| |
| |
As it is
generally quite warm at Camp Royal time bring wind shield covers, if you have
them. |
| |
| |
| |
Lock your
plane. The airport is unattended. Vandalism is not a problem, but why tempt
fate? |
| |
| |
| |
The flight
guides say to open and close flight plans via Arcata FSS: (707) 839-1545
(toll call) however, as Hyampom has the same area code and prefix as
Hayfork,I would imagine you could use Rancho Murietta FSS: 1-800-992-7433 or
close via Rancho Radio, Weaverville remote on 122.4 while at altitude over
Hayfork. |
