    VOCATIONAL SPEAKERS GUIDE

Camp Royal is the Youth Leadership conference organized by the Camp Royal Committee of District 5160. This is a premier program for over 140 young leaders every June, and there are opportunities for Rotarians from all over the district to participate in the program.

One of the ways Rotarians support Camp Royal is by bringing their vocational experience into our program. During the week of Camp Royal we devote six hours to Vocational Activity over three evenings.

Our campers have a unique opportunity to share in the vocations of selected Rotarians.

  Presentations
After dinner each visiting Rotarian is introduced at a camp assembly and has 60 seconds to market your profession. After introductions Rotarians go to the assigned area; campers follow. Each of the three discussion sessions is 20 minutes; 10 minutes of the Rotarian and 10 minutes for camper questions.

One approach for the Rotarian is to offer a brief autobiography, emphasizing the education acquired and the key life decisions leading to our current level of accomplishment. After 20 minutes a camp bell sounds and the campers have a couple of minutes to go to the next Rotarian. After three sessions, the camp assembly re-convenes for our famous Camp Royal skits; please do not miss the skits.

Note: Rotarians should be relaxed and flexible about the presentations and any questions that may arise. We offer this as a wonderful vocational opportunity for our campers, but it is also an opportunity for Rotarians to become acquainted with a number of bright, young leaders at Camp Royal. It is aways a very pleasant experience.

  Accommodations
Bring a sleeping bag and "dude-ranch" clothes. Camp Royal is in the Trinity mountains, at 2,500 ft. elevation; we are in a beautiful, country setting. It may be cold, it may be raining or it may be dry and hot. Be prepared for rustic standards; you will probably share a room with several other visiting Rotarians. We do have enough facilities to assure separate male and female accommodations. Food is plentiful and healthful; prepared by the ranch staff, we receive high marks for our cuisine every year. We eat together in a large covered dining area at scheduled times.

  Logistics
The suggested scenario is to arrive the afternoon of the selected day, tour the camp, enjoy dinner with us, spend the evening, complete the vocational presentations, stay overnight and finally depart when you wish after breakfast and morning activities the next day. Travel to and from Camp Royal is an individual responsibility; we are happy to provide directions and accommodations (see below). Please contact us through your Camp Royal Chairperson with questions and special circumstances.

The suggested time of arrival is 3:00PM. The first thing to do is to go to the Camp Royal Office. This is the BAR 717 library. Check-in with the Rotary Staff, get sleeping quarter assignments and a Camp Royal T-shirt. The dinner bell is at 5:30PM, so there will be time to tour the camp, get settled and meet some of the staff and campers.

  Location
Camp Royal is located at BAR 717, between Hayfork and Hyampom in northern California. If you are in Hayfork, anyone in town will point out the Hayfork-Hyampom Road to take to get to Camp Royal. If you wish, stop at Ernies Department Store and ask about us. The last 18 miles are on a winding moutain road with no services of any kind. There is no cell phone coverage in Hayfork or at camp.

  Hyampom Road

Note: Do not plan to drive this road after dark. To the right is a picture of the Hayfork/Hyampom Road after dark. Spooky, isn't it?!?

Driving to Hayfork:A Mapquest map to Camp Royal is available by clicking HERE. From Redding, take highway 299 west, for about two hours. Just before Douglas City, take a left onto Highway 3. Go another 40-60 minutes to Hayfork. Camp Royal is another 40 minutes. Stop at Ernie's Department Store if you need help in Hayfork. Mention Camp Royal and you'll get an extra warm reception.

Flying to Hayfork: Pilots Instructions are available on this web site. There are two landing strips near by: Hayfork and Hyampom. Radio us and we will send a car to pick you up. If you fly someone in you have earned a Camp Royal Airlines cap. And a shirt.

Note: Please do not show up at Camp Royal without prior notification to Camp Royal Rotary Staff. Rotarians and friends are always welcome, but we have limited facilities and we incur expenses with each visitor.
